The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has issued a statewide Air Quality Advisory for the entire state of Ohio as smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to adversely impact air quality.
Pollutants across the state are expected to range from the 'Unhealthy For Sensitive Groups' category in the southwest part of the state to the 'Unhealthy' category in the rest of the state. Hourly concentrations at times may reach the 'Very Unhealthy' to 'Hazardous' categories.
It is recommended, when possible, to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory conditions like asthma. Watch for symptoms including wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in the nose, throat, and eyes.

Digging into the task

State dredge workers dig out part of a 100-foot-long sediment trap in a creek near state Route 219 and Club Island Road earlier this week. They also plan to dredge 300 to 400 feet of the creek beyond the trap to remove accumulated sediment, said Brian Miller, Grand Lake St. Marys State Park assistant manager. The creek empties into the lake in Franklin Township. A sediment trap is an area dug out at the bottom of a stream used to capture soil runoff and attach nutrients before it enters a lake or water body. The work is being done in conjunction with Franklin Township trustees. State officials plan to build three more of the traps this year and two more next year. The structures are being built to improve water quality in the lake. They will be dipped out as needed.
