Grand Lake Fishing Report

Changing weather makes crappie scarce

By Matt Tuttle
Wow, what a run of weather we are having for Ohio. I know there were some days it was pretty cold, but that is what usually makes the crappies bite so well in the fall. So last week, it seemed like you could close your eyes and cast anywhere and still catch them, and fishing was so much fun.
It was warming heading into the weekend, but Saturday morning it rained for a bit, and then it all shut down. It seemed I almost needed a search warrant to find a crappie. The bite was super slow to nonexistent, but I was able to scratch together a catch of crappies. Sunday was much better but still not great. I need Mother Nature to level out for the fishing, but if you were out on Sunday, it was such a perfect day to be outside, period.
I was using the full two-inch plastic triple tail in purple and chartreuse, but over the weekend I downsized to the 1 1/2-inch triple tail in the same color and focused on rip-rap banks with docks on them. That was the key structure this weekend.
